He was first a chess master, then an engineer. He was already heading toward his thirties when the Thaw of the late 1960s came and Makanin became a writer. He has since been compared favorably to Chekhov, but his work is difficult to categorize within the post-Soviet canon, even by the Russian intelligentsia who are his most ardent readers. This collection of 13 papers, which includes a short autobiographical piece by Makanin and an interview with him, covers the experiences of Makanin and Trifonov in the 1970s, the author's modes of mediation and disjunction as well as connection, his retrieval of meaning in "Voices" and "The Loss," the worth of the hero in "Escape Hatch," Makanin's existential myths in the 1990s, Makanin's poetics, the ecological system in Underground, Dostoevsky's and Makanin's underground men, and Makanin's gulag.
